The poignant tale of Gasa Lami Singye and Changyul Boom Galem, often referred to as Bhutan’s Romeo and Juliet, has captivated generations. The story Set around the 17th century the story unfolds in beautiful village of changyul, Punakha. Galem was a daughter of a prosperous farmer and was renowned for her beauty, grace and kindness. Unknownst to anyone, she was entangled in a love affair with Singye, an attendant to the local Chieftain.
Their secret meetings were disrupted when the Chieftain desires for Galem’s grew and he asked Galems hand in marriage. He however was aware of the relationship of Galem and singye and therefore Singye was transferred to serve in Gasa, leaving Galem heartbroken. Galems parents were overjoyed with the news of Chieftain asking the hand of their daughter and immediately agreed to the proposal. Galem however resisted and confessed about her lover affair with singye and her pregnancy.
This enraged the father and made him disown her and chase her away from the house. She eventually passes away, and Singye, upon hearing the news, rushes back to Punakha. Finding her already on the funeral pyre, he joins her in death, their love immortalized in this tragic tale. The real site of their story continues to draw visitors, reminiscent of the iconic "Romeo and Juliet."
The remnants of Galem’s house in Punakha (Changyul) still stand. According to legend, Singye and Galem continue their story through reincarnation, but fate keeps them apart in different forms and places.
